When is earmuff protection the right choice?

Ear defenders are ideal for intermittent noise, brief tasks, and workplaces where hearing protection needs to be put on and taken off quickly. Earmuffs are also a smart choice for heavy or dirty work, as nothing has to be inserted directly into the ear canal.

What matters when choosing ear defenders?

Good hearing protection requires more than just a high SNR rating. Crucial factors include:

• Suitable attenuation for the specific workplace
• Soft, undamaged sealing cushions
• Sufficient headband pressure
• Adjustable headband
• Secure fit
• Compatibility with hard hats or face shields
• Comfort during extended wear
• Easy cleaning and simple replacement of hygiene kits

The SNR rating indicates average noise attenuation. But here too, more is not automatically better. Hearing protection should reduce noise without muffling all essential sound. Depending on the task, workers must still be able to clearly hear speech, warning signals, and critical machinery sounds.

A proper seal is mandatory. Otherwise, noise gets in.

Ear defenders only work when the cups fit clean and snug against the head. Thick spectacle frames, beards, long hair, earrings, damaged sealing cushions, or an improperly adjusted headband can compromise protection.

It might seem harmless at first.

It isn't.

Noise doesn't need a wide-open door. A tiny gap is all it takes.

That is why you should regularly inspect sealing cushions, headbands, and fit. Once cushions become stiff, cracked, or misshapen, they need to be replaced. Hearing protection is PPE. Not a family heirloom.
